Now that I am a week through school up here at Utah State University I thought I would take a few moments to write my thoughts about the modesty or lack thereof on campus. I know that Utah State University’s students are majority (80%) LDS but as I walk to and from class I have wondered where all the standards have gone. Last week I was taking a freshman only class called University Connections (it’s basically an introduction to the university) and while looking at the 2000+ freshman I saw tons of girls (few boys, but still some) who were wearing things that we are clearly taught against in our LDS.
| “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? … The temple of God is holy, which temple ye are” (1 Corinthians 3:16–17). |
“Your body is God’s sacred creation. Respect it as a gift from God, and do not defile it in any way…
Prophets of God have always counseled His children to dress modestly. The way you dress is a reflection of what you are on the inside. Your dress and grooming send messages about you to others and influence the way you and others act…
Never lower your dress standards for any occasion. Doing so sends the message that you are using your body to get attention and approval and that modesty is important only when it is convenient.
Immodest clothing includes short shorts and skirts, tight clothing, shirts that do not cover the stomach, and other revealing attire. Young women should wear clothing that covers the shoulder and avoid clothing that is low-cut in the front or the back or revealing in any other manner. Young men should also maintain modesty in their appearance. All should avoid extremes in clothing, appearance, and hairstyle. Always be neat and clean and avoid being sloppy or inappropriately casual in dress, grooming, and manners…
Do not disfigure yourself with tattoos or body piercings. If girls or women desire to have their ears pierced, they are encouraged to wear only one pair of modest earrings (For the Strength of the Youth, pamphlet).”
I was recently talking a co-worker who happened to be female. We were discussing if those girls/women who get raped bring any of it on by the way they dress. Don’t get me wrong, if you are a victim of rape it is never your fault. What I am saying is that by wearing shirts that are so tight that I can read the label of you bra through your shirt, or skirts/shorts so short that I can see your underwear what message are you trying to convey, I’m quick and easy? I can’t imagine that so many girls/women who wear such things are asking for that type of attention. My purpose in writing this is to help those who wear such things realize the message they are conveying to the rest of us.
A word of advice for all of you girls/women who dress immodest, DON’T! ON behalf of all men we don’t like it. As the adage states: “Modest are the hottest.” For all of you men out there, who wear those creepy pants, STOP! Why can’t we all just wear normal clothes like we were able to do for the past 20 or so years?
